Friday Finishes

After the gifts were opened and the turkey was eaten, I found time to do a bit of sewing.  I finished up my Winter’s Lane place mats (better late than never).  I love this fabric line by Kate & Birdie Paper Co. by Moda because it is wintery enough to leave out well past Christmas.

I made 6 place mats in total.  Each using the greeting card motif from the panel of this fabric line.

I used a sea foam green from my Kona solid stash that went quite well with the subtle green in the fabric.

I quilted a flower pattern using a stencil pattern and also quilted around the branches and animals in the greeting card design.  It’s a bit hard to see but I did pebbles in the flower centre and the stitching around the branches is very intricate.  I have to say, it was much easier doing FMQ using a stencil.  I find if I have a pattern or a guide of some sort, I can make fairly smooth motions.  It’s the free-form, forward-thinking part of the quilting that I’m not comfortable with quite yet.  In time, in time.

These beauties are in my dining room right now and I’m looking forward to eating on them soon!

I also got the cutting done for my next quilt.

This pile of fun will become a quilt for my son!  It’s not a surprise, he picked out the fabrics and the pattern.  I’ll be using the Lil’ Twister tool to make the broken pinwheel design.  I’m a little worried about all the ‘scraps’ that will be left over but I guess I’ll be able to use them in other quilts later.

I also received two squishy packages in the mail and should be getting one more shortly.  I’ll save that post for a Sunday Stash. For now, I’ll link up with my Friday Finishes!

  1. Beautiful place mats, Rita! You sure did a wonderful job on the quilting! Your son’s little twister quilt fabric choices are awesome. Those sure are some fabulous finishes and thanks for linking up with me!

  3. Thanks for hosting, Lorna! Congrats!

  4. Thanks! It’s my favourite fabric!

  5. Beautiful placemats and you’ll have fun with the twister blocks. I use the leftovers…..just handle them carefully.

  6. Thanks! Do you use the leftovers for the back? I’m thinking I’ll try that.

  7. I love how your place mats match, but are not identical.

  8. Thanks! I tried to make them look like a set but all be a bit different. They were fun to make.

I fell in love with this fabric line the first time I came across it!!! Have dragged my feet on any purchase, though. The “card” panel was the thing that caught my eye and your use is wonderful! I have really grown to like the panels that are out now… much more beautiful than years ago. Gorgeous mats… the quilting/stitching pattern you used!!! Hugs…………….

Beautiful place mats, and the fabrics you have cut for your son’s quilt look yummy. Looks like you are ready to get started. genie

  12. Thank you! That’s kind of you to say. I was a bit doubtful about the layout.

  13. Thank you so much! I wouldn’t wait too much longer to buy this fabric if you want it. It’s getting very hard to find and it’s going to be discontinued. Bluebird Park has a similar look by the same designers. Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Thanks! I started sewing my squares together tonight. I have a LOT of chain piecing in my near future. It will all be worth it when I see his sweet smile when it’s done!

Did some searching and, you’re right, it is really scarce!!!! I’ll see what the future holds!!!!

  16. treadlemusic says:

Thank you so much. Will get on it tomorrow!!!!!
